Dr. Rania Roushdy is an Associate Professor of Economics at the American University in Cairo and a Technical Advisor with the Population Council-Egypt office. Her research uses applied micro-econometric analysis to inform evidence-based policy in the fields of education and labor markets, with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa. She specializes in issues of education quality and inequality, school-to-work transitions, social protection, and women’s economic and social empowerment. Roushdy has led numerous impact evaluations—including RCTs and quasi-experimental studies—of development programs targeting youth education and employment. She also directed major nationally representative longitudinal surveys in Egypt and Sudan. Prior to AUC, she served as Senior Research Manager at the Population Council’s Egypt Office. Dr. Roushdy holds a PhD and MA in Economics from SUNY Stony Brook and degrees in Statistics from Cairo University. She has numerous publications spanning a range of topics, including child schooling and labor, technical and vocational education, education-occupation mismatch, informality and access to social insurance, employment and unemployment dynamics, poverty and inequality, gender-based violence, and migration and displaced population.
